Overview
Situated on the banks of the dry Kuruman River, Van Zylsrus Hotel was previously known as the Gemsbok Hotel but has been fully restored and offers guests a comfortable stay in this boutique hotel.

Guests have a choice of staying in one of six en-suite rooms, a Family Room or the lovely Honeymoon Suite. Three of the en-suite rooms are furnished with double beds and have full bathrooms; and the other three have single beds and bathrooms with showers only. The Family Room is furnished with a double and two single beds, and also has an en-suite bathroom with a shower only. The Honeymoon Suite has a private garden with an outdoor heated shower and is furnished with a double bed. All the rooms are equipped with air-conditioners, TVs, hairdryers and tea and coffee facilities.

Guests can enjoy their meals in the beautiful dining room or on the spacious patio where the arid Kalahari heat is tamed by several outdoor mist coolers. On those hot days, guests can also cool down around the swimming pool or sip a cocktail in the shallow water or at the bar. At night guests can enjoy good wine and a tasty braai around a crackling fire in the private boma under the stars. Weary travellers can also go for a massage from a qualified therapist to add to the relaxation.

The hotel has a conference facility that caters for a minimum of 10 delegates and can double as a rendezvous for a team building weekend. The curio shop will also tempt guests to buy a reminder of their stay, which has been created by local Kalahari inhabitants.

"It is refreshingly different. I liked it very much. In the middle of nowhere an artisty touch. Great! The food was very nice. Please tell the barman that the gravel road on the Botswana side from Bokspits to Twee Rivieren is in very bad condition and the tar road on the south african side is excellent. Therefore the tar road from Van Zylsrus to Bokspits on the botswana side is excellent."

"We loved this hotel. Be warned that the dirt road to and from this place is a tester, but the hotel was wonderful. The dcor was quirky and interesting, the food was excellent, the managers and staff were chatty and friendly and answered all our questions. Rooms were airconditioned and there was a pool to cool off in. Really essential at this time of year. Highly recommended stop over."

"We really found this to be a treat. Real RSA over the top "kitch" but it works very well for this hotel. We enjoyed exploring all the quaint nooks and crannies eachhaving something of interest. Susan is a great hostess and looked after us very well. Lovely warm atmosphere in the dining room. The pub echoes years of "vriende" (friends) sharing talk on politics, rugby, farming and hunting in this semi barren region of South Africa. We enjoyed the break here both ways as we used this route and thenvia Botswana to Kgalagadi on the excellent Molopo Freeway to Bokspits.Very comfortable and well appointed bedrooms.Well worth a stop over."
"What a pleasure"

"The accommodation and facilities are superb. The bed was like seeping on a cloud and I found the decorto beoutstanding. I would recommend everyone travelling to Kgalagadi to spend a night there on their way. From a food perspective, I would stick to the basics. This being said, I still give Van Zylsrus Hotel an 11 out of 10 and will deffinetly stay there again when I return to the park."

"A very welcome stay, extremely comfortable, food very good and the Sunday trip to see the Meerkat Project the highlight of ourholiday in South Africa! We asked for directions to Upington before we left and the map we were given was spot on.This gravel road was so much better than the Askham road which was our original plan. Quiet and also fascinating !Thanks for everythingPam & Robert Berry"
