Overview
The Artist's Cottageis situated in the centre of the little town called Sutherland. The cottage is a typical Karoo-style building, but it has been renovated with modern flare without losing its authentic feel.

Sutherland is situated in the Northern Cape, just a stone's throw from the Western Cape's border, and is known for its clear skies, stars and its cold temperatures in winters, which can drop to below zero and snows occasionally. The town is also steeped in South African history, endemic succulents and amazing architecture.

Sutherland is home to SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, which is thesecond largest optical telescope in the world. The town itself is quaint and quiet, but there is more to it than just visiting the observatory. The Artist's Cottage is ideal for that weekend away from the city, and spending some quality time with family.

The house contains two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, and comfortably sleeps four.Downstairs has a bedroom with a double bed and en-suite bathroom. An open-plan dining area, kitchen and big fireplace, built in the old-fashioned way and is big enough to climb into and sit next to the fire, is available. The kitchen has a fridge, a small gas stove, a microwave, and all cutlery and crockery that you may need. Upstairs is a loft bedroom, which is accessible via stairs inside the house or outside of the house. The room has a modern open-plan bathroom with a loose standing Victorian bath, a separate toilet and enough space to sit and read.

"We arrived In Sutherland on 20 Feb 18at( about 13h40) only to discover that 13 Jubilee Street is NOT,(as stated on the booking confirmation) the correct address. We phoned the 2 contact numbers provided on the booking confirmation to be told by these contacts that they are no longer associated with Artists Cottage as it has been sold. On phoning Safarinow we were put in contact with the hostess L S Loader who claimed that she did tried to contact us to arrange ETA, BUT as we were in TANKWA Karoo Nat Park - we had no reception. We questioned that fact the house was not named for indentification (a note of any kind with a contact number on the door would have helped) & were also concerned about the steep stairs going to the loft that makes it very difficult for pensioners to carry luggage up the loft room. We were told that as an alternative to use the outside stairs BUT there are no outside lights at either the front & back door or the stairs. Difficult to use at night coming back from star gazing. Also, at the top of the inside stairs, are an opening that is unsafe to anyone travelling with young children. The stairs are fixed with steel wires attached to the loft, although it felt safe, made a very unsafe impression. We asked for extra outside chairs and a fan .... and these were dropped outside on the pavement while the door was open and we were inside. We decided to stay only one night due to unforeseen circumstances, and this was accepted by the hostess and we arranged for her to collect the key at 10am. We, however, were ready earlier andsent her a sms to advise her that we left the key inside (because we did not want to be a nuisance)and closed the door. We were having coffee at the restaurant 50m down the road where we could watch the house. The sms reply received stated: That I was a challenge and that I should work on my communication skills, and well as being very rude, and that I was reported as such to Safarinow I take exception to this and invite Safarinow to contact any of the other bookings that we made on this road trip to check my communication skills/attitude.The house however, was well equipped and beautifully furnished. I would not return to it though."

"The house has been beautifully restored, but not over the top and feel as if we had been taken back in time. Not close to main road so nice and quiet. We had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable!"

"We had such an amazing stay at the Artist Cottage this weekend. The house is beautiful. Its a pity we didn't have snow but that is the only thing that did not go as planned. The hourly tour at SALT was amazing and very informative and we did the stargazing with Jurg ar Sterland... Definitely worth every cent.. All and all absolutely AMAZING experience and stay. Will definitely recommend it. Thank you Annelien"

"What a lovely time we had in Sutherland. The accommodation was really really lovely. We will definitely be going back again. Thanks to Annelien for organizing wood for us and a personal touch of brownies on arrival! The only fault would be that a new lounge suite is needed. We had a wonderful time there - so peaceful and relaxing - THANK YOU Annelien."

"Quaint cottage however the furniture is all old and the couch's especially are dirty and are falling to pieces, the one can hardly be sat on. Considering the cold temperatures in Sutherland, I feel that one should at least be able to heat the cottage properly but with the huge gaps and holes in the doors this is impossible. It would have been nice to arrive at a warm cottage and I am sure that it would not have taken much trouble and effort for this to be done. The 2 plate gas stove is not really enough. The cottage was however clean.I do think that considering the above the price is expensive."
