Overview
Khululeka Retreat is unique for its beauty and unspoiled surroundings; it is set in an indigenous state forest high on a hill with an awesome 180 degree view of the sea, estuary and Ntafufu river valley.

Khulula Retreat is located in Pondoland on the Wild Coast, 10 km up the coast from Port St Johns. There is no village, town, shops or anything else to detract from the beauty of one of the most spectacular and unspoiled traditional tribal rural areas in South Africa.

A pristine 2 km beach, accessible by the Ntafufu River awaits your discovery with our canoes.

Out here it is still dark Africa with no electricity. We use candles and biofuel lamps for light which creates a fantastic calm, relaxing and romantic atmosphere. With no electric lights to interfere, star gazing on the hill is an easy way to pass laid back evenings. Our lodge comes fully equipped with all the immediate luxuries of modern day living and rural hospitality. Built in the early 1900s the lodge was most probably the first hotel type accommodation on the Wild Coast.

"It is paradise"
23 Feb 2009
By Hugo, South Africa
"We did a trip around the Wild Coast with our three children and my parents who came over from the Netherlands. We all agreed that Kululeka was by far the best and most beautiful place we ever stayed at. It is paradise with the most significant views all around you. The accommodation is extremely good: spacious, clean and everything you need is available. The canoe trip to the private beach is a wonderful experience and we all wished we could have stayed longer."

"Stunning setting suited to couples. Be prepared for 45 minute drive from Port St. John's, mainly on gravel road. Best to travel locally only."

"I would recommend Khululeka to anyone. We stayed as part of our honeymoon and it was definitely one of, if not the best.We were warmly welcomed and our hosts were knowledgeable and went out of their way to make our stay fantastic.Dinner cooked on the fire was one of the best I've eaten. The stars were so clear no light haze to block them.Great dogs, fresh bananas, horses, beach, mangrove swamps, crabs... the list of amazing things goes on and on.I will definitely be back as our stay was too short.Everyone should try this experience."

"This is the place to really get away from 'it all', back to basics living, with stunning views. The guys are cool and their conservation efforts shoud be supported whole heartedly. We didn't stay long enough and you need time to explore the local area's charms and beauty."
